Powered by Cityfest and the City of Wilmington Office of Cultural Affairs, the UAE Arts Complex is Wilmington’s pioneering Creative Placemaking project.
Located in the East Side Historic District, the UAE aims to harness the transformative power of arts and culture to drive economic development and social change in one of the city’s traditional African-American communities.
The Urban Artist Exchange was conceived to revitalize the long-vacant Wilmington Police Department horse stables into a vibrant arts hub. For Phase II, the challenge was to add an open-seat amphitheater to enrich the community’s cultural offerings and provide a dedicated space for performances and gatherings. EDiS was entrusted with the construction of the new amphitheater, focusing on integrating it seamlessly into the existing arts complex while respecting the historic surroundings.
The project spanned 2,200 square feet, featuring a new construction with an estimated cost of $1.9 million. The amphitheater was designed with a timber frame and steel structure, incorporating masonry and chard wood (Shou Sugi Ban technique) to enhance its aesthetic and durability. Key features included a green room, storage, and a control room housed in adjacent support buildings.
Building
Building the Urban Artist Exchange Amphitheater was more than just a construction project for us at EDiS; it was about crafting a space people to gather to celebrate creativity and culture. We were meticulous in executing this innovative design that hopefully becomes an iconic landmark for Wilmington’s East Side.
