music in higher education.

Puglisi Orchestra Hall, situated in the Roselle Center for the Arts on University of Delaware (UD) campus, is a quintessential cultural center at UD. Puglisi Hall is a place where students can go to practice, where special events are held, and home to the UD Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble. The Center for the Arts has hosted hundreds of concerts and banquets, speakers, and practice sessions since it was built in 2007, and was ready for a revision that would better embody Puglisi Orchestra Hall’s central role to campus culture. The space can also be transformed into a banquet hall for special occasions.

Building

without interruption.

EDiS Company was chosen to renovate the occupied 4,200 SF music hall with improving acoustics as a primary objective. From the project’s inception, Project Manager Mike Neal and Senior Superintendent Craig Henry knew working on an active college campus called for vigilant separation between an active work zone and a bustling campus life. Working as a team, they successfully created barriers designed to keep dust and debris under control, and to keep noise at a minimum to allow practices and rehearsals to continue uninterrupted. The team also coordinated with the University of Delaware Planning and Project Delivery Committee for the seamless fire alarm system, sprinkler, and electrical shut-offs needed for the project’s advancement without interrupting student life.

Building

better sound.

Among the renovations at Puglisi Hall was a focus on improving the sound quality generated by the room itself. The original ceiling consisted of drywall, and it was replaced with a metal grid holding a series of acoustic reflector panels to increase the quality of sound in the Hall. After demolishing the ceiling, the team needed to compensate for exposed ventilation ducts and structural gridwork. This was accomplished through a meticulous refurbishing of the walls and ceiling with black sound-proof wrapping and special, noise-reducing curtains. The entire wood floorwork and the Hall’s trim was refurbished into a beautiful finish, adding a majestic quality to accompany the music that will be enjoyed for years to come.
