Tower Hill School’s auditorium was originally built in 1919 and held just over 200 people. The arts programs of the 700 student private school had grown significantly over the years and the existing facility had become inadequate for the school’s needs.
The new Pierre S. du Pont Arts Center not only satisfied the school’s need for a performing arts center for student productions, but it did more. The building included a 450-seat auditorium with orchestra pit, fly loft, scene shop, dressing rooms, and conference room. It also includes a photography lab and extensive gallery space to display students’ artwork.
One of the problems that the Architect had to solve was how to put a relatively massive building on a confined site – the Arts Center is located at the edge of a residential neighborhood. In order to keep the building from overwhelming the surrounding homes, the Architect visually reduced its facade by varying its massing and the color and pattern of the brick. The result is a building that sat comfortably on the site and in harmony with its neighbors.
