EDiS Company was hired to renovate Brandywine Springs Elementary School, Red Clay School District’s largest elementary school at 127,000 square feet, and the sole K-8 facility in the district. The existing water-sourced heat pump system was replaced by a new, arrayed, variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system serving all of the classrooms and office areas in the school. Supplemental heating was provided by an upgraded hydronic heating system that included condensing boilers, variable-flow pumping, and retrofit radiant heating systems throughout. The large group areas are served by high efficiency DX cooling air handlers with integrated hot-gas reheat systems for dehumidification.
To support the upgraded mechanical systems and replace equipment that was no longer in production, the main electrical switchgear was upgraded and associated distribution panels were replaced as well. New ceilings and painting of the facility were also included in the project. Finally, for improved student safety, the main office area was reconfigured to provide a secure entrance for all visitors to the site. The project took place over 18 months and 14 phases, with full occupancy of the school maintained throughout the academic calendar year.
