Monika’s Journey in Construction

From Lithuania to the U.S – and Drafting to Managing!

Born and raised in Lithuania, EDiS Project Manager Monika Mickute came to the U.S. as a foreign exchange student, staying with a host family in Delaware. What began as a temporary experience turned into a long-term goal: graduating and building a career in the U.S.

Once here, while attending Delaware Technical Community College studying drafting and CAD, Monika developed an interest in engineering and construction. Though her career in the industry began with a focus on CAD services, she found a passion for architecture and engineering. She took on the challenge of balancing a full course load with a full-time job and committed herself to becoming a licensed Structural Engineer with a degree from Drexel University.

Though she enjoyed engineering, she realized she wanted a broader scope of work. That’s when she found EDiS—a company where she could blend engineering with construction management and problem-solving.

Lessons Learned

Monika has faced many challenges both in life and career. She balanced a demanding five-year education with ongoing visa renewals and immigration requirements. The process was both financially and emotionally taxing, but she stayed focused on her goals.

“If I could go back in time and tell my younger self one thing, it would be that while hard work pays off, taking care of your personal well-being is just as important. The industry is demanding, and maintaining a balance between career and health is key.”

For Monika, the most rewarding aspect of construction is the constant challenge and continuous learning. No two projects are ever the same, keeping the work dynamic and engaging. One of her proudest moments? Driving past buildings she helped bring to life, knowing her work has made a lasting impact.

Leading the Way

Women in construction often feel the need to work harder to prove themselves. Monika has built her reputation by staying resilient, honing her skills, and leading by example.

As we celebrate Women in Construction Week, we recognize and appreciate the women who continue to inspire, lead, and shape the future of our industry.
