The EDiS team gathered October 12, 2021 with Latin American Community Center (LACC) staff and volunteers, state officials, project partners, and the Wilmington community for the ground breaking of the new 16,300 square foot Early Learning Center at 402 North Van Buren Street. The LACC needed an entirely new space, as the community center itself could only house 136 students. The new space will allow a jump from those 136 students to 214. More than just a daycare, the LACC and the Early Learning Center provide duel English education for the older children and Spanish immersion for the infants and toddlers. An approximately 2,100 square foot roof-top play deck will be installed as well.
The center will serve as a cornerstone of the community for years to come, providing a space for children to develop both mentally and physically during the most crucial stages of life. Having originally built the Latin American Community Center itself in 1999, the EDiS team is excited to pick back up where they left off. Keep an eye out for the grand opening in late 2022! “The LACC was fielding between three and five calls per week from families looking for a seat in that childcare center. That’s three to five families a week we had to turn away because we didn’t have anymore space. In the summer of 2019 our waiting list for room in one of those classrooms had grown to 50 families.” – LACC Board Chair, Cristina Brounce
