As part of Careers in Construction Month celebration, we’re shining a light on a few members of our hardworking teams! Senior Project Manager Andy Hickey has been with EDiS for 26 years, starting his journey after discovering a passion for architectural engineering in high school. Here’s a glimpse into his daily routine and career path:
Morning Routine and Staying Organized
Andy’s day starts with a chat with the superintendent to plan the day’s tasks. Two cups of coffee help fuel him, and to stay on top of things, he relies on detailed lists, tackling issues trade contract by trade contract. “Make a list, prioritize, and then pick up the phone,” Andy says—communication is key to keeping projects moving smoothly.
Handling the Unexpected and Managing Stress
Andy’s experience has taught him how to manage stress, a vital skill when dealing with the unpredictable, like a tornado when working at Appoquinimink School District’s Fairview Campus, or the many unexpected challenges of COVID-19. For quick breaks, he steps out for fresh air or grabs a snack. Note: cheese sticks or cookies are his go to.
Advice for Aspiring Project Managers
“Make lists and pick up the phone,” Andy advises. In a world full of emails, direct, 1 on 1 communication can make a big difference. He also believes in prioritizing, solving the most urgent problems first.
What Makes EDiS Special
For Andy, the family feel at EDiS stands out. “You can talk to anyone here,” he says. The support he’s received over the years has helped him grow, and now he mentors new project managers, paying the company culture forward.
